The Cast Iron Dutch Oven
by JP on Mar.13, 2009, under Camping, Gear Review
I have recently been having some conversations with some fellow campers over at Campingblogger concerning 10 Tips to Better Outdoor Cooking, when we began talking about the use of Dutch Ovens.
These wonderful little devices may be the single most handy cooking necessity for Outdoor Camping (when not needing to pack light), with the exception maybe of fire.
The cast iron Dutch Oven provides one with great diversity when cooking outdoors.
On one camping trip this past month, we cooked Brunswick Stew, Hungry Man breakfast (a combination of sausage, cheese, hashbrown, and egg), and most impressive of all…..BIRTHDAY CAKE with Fun Fetti (for a wife who was celebrating) for 6 people, all on one Dutch Oven.
I can’t imagine a more diverse cooking system. The Dutch Oven provides one with a system for creating a type of convection heating oven, a pot for heating open stews and soups, and the lid doubles as a handy skillet when inverted.
If you do a lot of “car camping”, I have to recommend you invest the $50 or so dollars on a good Cast Iron Dutch Oven that is large enough for a group. Otherwise, you will end up spending much more money having to replace numerous pots and pans charred by fire compared to the long lasting cast iron that essentially never goes bad. Plus all those extra pots and pans takes us a lot more room, and doesn’t provide the same great diversity.
This topic also has me curious, does anyone have any other good recipes for a Dutch Oven over a fire or coal bed? I’m going to begin writing some recipes I have used in the past. Let me know what has worked out for you all, or recipes that you plan to try.
